Australian Federal Battery Rebate

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program will save you money

The Australian Federal Government is offering a battery rebate program called the “Cheaper Home Batteries Program,” starting July 1, 2025, to help reduce the cost of home battery storage. The program provides a 30% discount on the purchase and installation of home batteries, equivalent to around $372 per usable kWh of battery storage. The subsidy is uncapped and applies to homes, small businesses, and community facilities.

Here’s a breakdown of the key aspects of the Australian Government's "Cheaper Home Batteries Program":

July 1, 2025

An up-front discount, aiming to lower costs by about 30%.

Homes, small businesses, and community facilities.

The rebate is uncapped, meaning there is no limit on the number of subsidies available.

The program is delivered through the existing Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES).

The federal rebate can be combined with state or local battery rebates.

For a typical 11.5-13.5 kWh battery, the savings could be around $4,000.

Important Considerations:
  • Installation Timing:
Batteries installed before July 1, 2025, can still qualify for the rebate, as long as they are not switched on until the program officially begins.

  • Documentation:
The installer will handle most of the paperwork, with a simple sign-off required to confirm installation and commissioning.

  • Solar Systems:
The battery rebate applies to both new solar-plus-battery installations and additions to existing solar systems.

The Australian government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program, announced as part of the Australian Government’s $2.3 billion renewable energy initiative, aims to make home battery systems more affordable. Starting July 1, 2025, the program offers a 30% discount on battery installations for households, businesses, and community facilities, including those with existing or new rooftop solar systems. The subsidy is not means-tested and is administered through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme, which has previously supported solar panel installations since 2011.

Eligible battery systems range from 5 to 50 kilowatt-hours in capacity. Government modeling suggests that households with existing solar installations could save up to $1,100 annually on their power bills, while those installing both solar and battery systems could save up to $2,300 annually—approximately 90% of a typical electricity bill.

The program is designed to encourage the adoption of home batteries, which store excess solar energy for later use, thereby reducing reliance on the grid and lowering electricity costs. The initiative is expected to drive the installation of over a million new batteries by 2030, contributing to Australia’s renewable energy goals. Additional reading on ABC.
